Scientific topics from sermons- lesson (20)- Speed of Earth

By Dr. Nabulsi

Praise be to Allah, the Lord of Creations, and Peace and blessings be upon our prophet Muhammad, the faithful and the honest.
Oh, Allah, we know nothing but what You teach us. You are the All- Knower, the Wise. Oh Allah, teach us what is good for us, and benefit us from what You taught us, and increase our knowledge. Show us the righteous things as righteous and help us to do them, and show us the bad things as bad and help us to keep away from them.
O Allah our Lord, lead us out from the depths of darkness and illusion, unto the lights of erudition and knowledge, and from the muddy shallows of lusts unto the heavens of Your Vicinity.

How many rotations does earth have around the sun:
In the Holy Quran there are a couple of Verses that refer to the speed of the Earth. The first Verse goes,
“Is not He Who has made the Earth a resting place, and has made rivers in its midst, and has made firm mountains therein, and has set a barrier between the two seas (of salt and sweet water)? Is there a god with Allah?! Nay! But most of them know not!”
[XXVII; 61]
 The second Verse is,
“Allah is He Who has made for you the Earth as a dwelling place and the sky as a canopy, and has given you shape, and has made your shapes good-looking, and has provided you with good things. That is Allah, your Lord. Blessed is Allah, the Lord of all worlds!”
[XL; 64]
Undoubtedly, the speed of the Earth’s movement round the Sun is a marvelous cosmic Sign of which a great many people are heedless and from which they have turned away. The Earth turns round itself at a speed of 1600 km/h. It also turns round the Sun at a speed of 30 km/sec. In other words, the Earth has two kinds of movement: an axial rotation and a movement round the Sun. Nevertheless, it remains perfectly stable and comfortable. If it were to shake, even slightly, all buildings thereon would be demolished:
“Is not He Who has made the Earth a resting place?!”
Who can make the Earth stable? Can you, human beings, make it stable?! When the Earth shook in some countries, a whole city was completely devastated. Why couldn’t you prevent that?! Why couldn’t you keep it stable?! In this context, Allah, All-Mighty, says,
“And We turned (the towns of Sodom in Palestine) upside down and rained down on them stones of baked clay.”
[XV; 74]
What did you do?! Can you prevent an earthquake?! Can you keep it stable?!
“Is not He Who has made the Earth a resting place?!”
Your house, for which you pay tens of millions of Pounds, what would its value be if the Earth shook and caused it to crack. Your wealth, by which you buy houses, would be completely wasted if the Earth shook and caused them to crack. What could you do?!
“Is not He Who has made the Earth a resting place?!”
Try to fly on and airplane and watch its wings, which shake to the right and left. Can mankind build vehicles that do not shake?! Try to drive a car, no matter how luxurious it might be!
“Is not He Who has made the Earth a resting place?!”
Yes, indeed! It is complete stability! A building may exist for one, two or more centuries, yet it remains safe and sound, which provides clear evidence of the Earth’s stability.

Our Lord, Glory to Him, says,

“And you see the mountains and think them motionless, but they are moving as clouds do. Such is the Work of Allah, Who perfected all things.”
[XXVII; 88]
The above Verses show clearly that mountains move like clouds, which provides delicate reference to the fact that the Earth turns round itself.
In its axial rotation, the Earth moves at a speed of 500 m/sec. This is because the Earth’s circumference is 40,000 km’s, and it turns round itself once every 24 hours. If we divide 40,000 by 24, we get 1600 km/h, i.e. 500 m/sec, which is the speed of the axial rotation of the Earth.

“Is not He Who has made the Earth a resting place.?!”
Who has made the Earth stable and comfortable while it is turning round itself, round the Sun, with the Sun and along with the whole galaxy of the Milky Way?! In this context, Allah, All-Mighty, says,
“It is not for the Sun to overtake the Moon, nor does the night outstrip the day. They all float: each in an orbit.”
[XXXVI; 40]
Second meaning: If someone went on a spaceship beyond the Earth’s gravity, where things become weightless. Life would also become unbearable because the whole ship would be weightless, and all things would scatter all around it. Who has made all things on the Earth’s surface attracted to it?! It is Allah, All-Mighty:
“The Creator of all things. So worship Him (Alone).”
[VI; 102]
If the Earth were made to increase the speed of its rotation, all things would fly off its surface. If it increased its speed 17 times, all things would also fly off its surface. If you put a glass of water on a table, what keeps it stable on the table’s surface? It is the force of gravity, by which all things on the Earth’s surface are attracted to its center. Who has made seas of the southern hemisphere attracted to the Earth? If someone goes to the southern hemisphere, to Australia and Argentina for example, what will he see? Everything is normal: land is still land and the sky is still the sky. Look at Australia on the map; it is in the southern hemisphere. So what is the sky? It is the side of the universe opposite the Earth’s center, whether one goes to the north or south hemispheres. Who has made the seas in both hemispheres attracted to the Earth?
“Is not He Who has made the Earth a resting place?!”
Who has made the air attached to the Earth and moving along with it? If the air were not attached to the Earth, there would be devastating storms and winds destroying everything on the Earth’s surface. But the atmosphere is attached to the Earth!
“Is not He Who has made the Earth a resting place?!”
If you put something on the ground, it remains in its place and does not move away. It is the force of gravity that keeps all things on the Earth’s surface attracted to it. Yes, indeed! It is the Infinite Divine Power of Allah, All-Mighty, Who created the force of gravity!
They are only two Verses in the Holy Quran:

“Is not He Who has made the Earth a resting place, and has made rivers in its midst, and has made firm mountains therein, and has set a barrier between the two seas (of salt and sweet water)? Is there a god with Allah?! Nay! But most of them know not!”
[XXVII; 61]
 and
“Allah is He Who has made for you the Earth as a dwelling place and the sky as a canopy, and has given you shape, and has made your shapes good-looking, and has provided you with good things. That is Allah, your Lord. Blessed is Allah, the Lord of all worlds!”
[XL; 64]
If you go to th`e Moon, your weight decreases by 1/6. In other words, if you weigh 60 kg’s on the Earth’s surface, you will weigh only 10 kg’s on the Moon. This is the force of gravity.
By the two above Verses Allah, Most Gracious, desires to call our attention to this cosmic fact. Happy is he who contemplates them, as contemplation for one hour is better than worship for sixty years,

“Say: ‘Behold all that is in the heavens and the Earth!’ But neither Signs nor Warnings benefit those who believe not.”
[X; 101]
